Accenting with Black

Black has typically been given a bad rep when it comes to making a room livelier. Oftentimes when people think of a “pop of color” to elevate a space, black is not a color that comes to mind. Although, black accents can bring out the colors surrounding it or accent negative space, which can make a room feel bigger and brighter. Our lead designer, Tina Lagasse, describes black accents as “a great way to add an edge to your space.” The following are a few examples of black accents that can elevate your room.

Black Accent Pieces Against Dark Furniture

Do you feel as though something is missing in your room, but not quite sure what? Need something subtle to bring everything all together? By adding a black accent, like the vases found at JADE below to the dark coffee table, the space can feel more grounded and complete. While people often like to accent with lighter colors to make a space feel calm, it is important to balance out those colors to keep your room interesting.

Using Black Accents to Anchor a Focal Piece

When having a large and loud focal piece in your room, it is important to make sure to anchor the room down. Using black accent pieces can be a creative and easy way to do this, but you want to make sure it looks and feels well thought out. A good rule of thumb is to use three black accent pieces to anchor down a room, such as a living room. Those three living room design pieces can be a lamp, throw pillows, and a frame or two to sit on your coffee table or mantle.

Black Accent Wall

With the trend of accent walls on the rise, why not stand out with black? The accent wall below is a great example of a trendy, yet timeless way to accent black. To make sure you are not overpowering the room with black, turn to the 60-30-10 rule. The 60-30-10 rule is a guide to how much of each color should be in each room, 60% of the main color. 30% of the backdrop color (most likely the color of your accent wall), and 10% of the accent color.

Black Feminine Accents

Bedroom interior design can be tricky because it is supposed to be a place where you feel calm and comfortable. Having the color black in the bedroom can be tricky, but when done correctly black accents can give a beautiful feminine touch. When accenting with black in the bedroom, you do not have to scatter the black around the entire room, you can stick to one area with a few simple pieces to contrast the lighter colors in your room. For example, you can accent your light bedding with a darker side table and black accent pieces like the ones found at JADE below.
